Instinct
Release Date: January 1, 2012
Target Reader: Adult
Synopsis: Werewolf Sean Holloway treats the village marketplace like a sexual
buffet, though his charm does little to win over his latest entrée of
choice. Whether because of Jem Stonehouse’s unique scent, her headstrong
nonchalance, or the fact he is forbidden to see her by his pack’s
rules, Sean wants her.
When Jem is nothing but flippant toward his advances, he pursues her with vigour, stealing moments alone with her without a libido-driven agenda.
The new and heady experience for him drives their relationship beyond romantic interest, and straight toward love.
That is, until Jem learns the truth about Sean’s heritage. Knowledge of the existence of werewolves leads to only one outcome: death.
In this prequel to Darkness & Light, we are taken back in time, to the very beginning of Jem and Sean’s love-across-the-centuries relationship.
Did it end there? Or did Sean defy his own pack to save the woman he loves?

A little chat with the author!
What made you choose to write in the Genre that
you write in.
I
have a huge love of werewolves so it was pretty much a no-brainer. And although
the so-far-released titles in The Holloway Pack Stories are definite paranormal
romances, there will be titles later on that will bend more toward urban
fantasy.
What is your favorite thing about the writing
experience and why?
The
escapism. I can become fully immersed in what I’m doing, and sometimes when I
read the story back, I can reach a really cool sentence/paragraph/scene that I
don’t recognize/can’t recall writing and think, ‘dude, did I do this?’
How do you handle bad reviews?
I
read them and look for feedback I can apply to my current or future work, look
for a consistent complaint to ascertain if I’ve erred or if it’s merely
personal taste that’s spurred the negative comments, and then I move on. Long
story short: I don’t react but I do take the comments on board.
.
What book do you recommend everyone should read
and why?
Oh,
cripes! One? One! I don’t read many stand-alones so I’m going to go with a
series and say Georgina Kincaid. There’s some great plot going on, the characters
are full-bodied and colourful, and whilst the series in its entirety is a
roller coaster of emotions the final book leaves you well and truly sated.
Where is your favorite place to write?
I
don’t think I’ve ever really figured out a favourite place. Most of the time, I
sit at my kitchen table because I have decent light, food and drinks are at
hand, and when no one else is home the dog keeps me company. When not there, I
sit on my bed. But either place can leave me feeling a little achey so if I
ever had a generous windfall I think I’d probably invest in a tailor-made desk
and chair.
Where did your inspiration for this book come
from?
It’s
the prequel to my first novel, Darkness & Light. When writing Darkness
& Light, I always had a vague outline of how Jem & Sean first met. It
was around a year later, I decided to explore that a little deeper and see
where it took me. Of course, the idea of writing from Sean’s POV for the first
time was a pretty decent incentive, too.
What words of advice would you give to aspiring
authors?
Usually
I give a huge chunk of wisom-filled pearls (ha!), but I’ll narrow it down to 2
basic ones: Write what you love and never give up!
What is your favorite character in your book and
why?
Sean.
Hands down. He’s such a darling to work with.
What is your favorite scene from the book or
why?
Eeeeek,
I think it has to be the very first time Sean entices Jem into the forest with
him because it’s the first time we see Sean battle against his instincts.
If your book was turned into a movie who would
you want to direct it?
I’m
no good on director’s names but I wouldn’t mind the director of Underworld or
New Moon … maybe. You think they’re reading this?
What is your favorite time of year?
Autumn.
I love rain that isn’t freezing and doesn’t turn day into night.
What projects do you have planned for the
future?
I intend
for there to be a total of 6 full length novels for The Holloway Pack Stories
before I allow those guys to rest. I’m currently working on a short story for
an anthology. A crazy-a$$ed idea for a YA popped into my head (YA? I DON’T
WRITE YA!!!!!!!!!!!!) so I hope to explore that … I have other shorts/novellas
planned for The Holloway Pack …. I have around 12 story openings jotted down
that are waiting for attention so I’ll investigate those and decide which ones
can be built on … Yeah, lots of stuff.
What do you hope to say to people with your
writing?
I
merely hope they’re lucky enough to experience the escapism I try to offer. But
my stories are always big on loyalty, love, and having the strength and courage
to fight for what you believe in.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
With
more Holloway Pack Stories in the hands of readers. And maybe making enough
money from book sales to trade up my current car because it’s pretty sucky (but
don’t tell it I said that or the blighter won’t start).
Coffee or Tea?
Coffee! But only 3 cups max a day. J
About the author:
One
day, a character and scene popped into J. A. Belfield’s head, and she
started controlling the little people inside her imagination, as though
she were the puppet master and they her toys. Questions arose: What
would happen if …? How would they react if …? Who would they meet if …?
Before she knew it, a singular scene had become an entire movie. The
characters she controlled began to hold conversations. Their actions
reflected the personalities she bestowed upon them. Within no time, they
had a life, a lover, a foe, family … they had Become.
One day, she wrote down her thoughts. She’s yet to stop.
J. A. Belfield lives in Solihull, England, with her husband, two children, three cats and a dog. She writes paranormal romance, with a second love for urban fantasy.

Great interview! Nice to see there's more Holloway pack to come :)
ReplyDeleteI like the "favorite place to write" question/answer, because I always imagine writers having their own writing room where the walls bear framed covers from all their books, but then I wonder if any of them just plunk down on the couch and get to it, hehe! Everyone has their own writing style and I'm a fan of JAB's, that's fer sure, hehe! :)
Thanks for hosting such a lovely interview, Janiera! :D
