Questions
1.
What is your favorite thing about the
writing experience and why? Writing is such a creative outlet. You can express
any feeling or thought, and then represent it in any situation. Writing is
unlimited, just like your imagination. There is something so liberating about
letting your pen fly across the page (not literally, of course). It turns a
piece of paper into a story or a letter. It can say and give so much.
2.
Who is your favorite character in Vocations
and why?The main characters, Jeannie, Lila and Pamela all have multifaceted
personalities. They were fun to create, but were also challenging to write.
However, my favorite character is Duncan – Pamela’s boyfriend whom she meets
atuniversity. He’s such an amazing character because he really contrasts the
other teenage boys featured in Vocations.
He’s more of a man because he’s original, caring, respectful and funny.
Duncan’s definitely the “perfect boyfriend” type of character, but he’s also real.
3.
What is your favorite scene from Vocationsand
why? I love the scene where Pamela and Duncan first kiss, only to be
interrupted by Pamela’s mother! It’s such a sweet scene mixed with humor and
embarrassment. More importantly, it’s a very truthful moment in regards to
Pamela’s reaction and feelings.
4.
If Vocations was turned into a movie,
who would you want to direct it? As a screenwriter, I’ve worked with three
different directors. Filmmaking is such a collaborative process that it’s
amazing, and perhaps somewhat rare, to find a director who not only shares your
vision but alsoadds to your project in a positive way. I think I’ve found that
with Brian Vaughan of Spirit Rider Productions, so I would love for him to
direct the screen adaptation of Vocations.
5.
What is your favorite time of year?
Summer! I’m addicted to the sun, sand and surf. I love being outdoors and could
spend forever hiking in the woods, swimming, or just relaxing at the beach or
my cottage. Although I enjoy all of the seasons for different reasons, I truly
believe nothing can beat the excitement of summer.
6.
What is your favorite song?It changes
constantly, but right now I’m loving“Satellite” by Santana and featuring Jorge
Moreno. I adore the beat and lyrics.Wyclef Jean’s “Dance like This” is also
amazing.
7.
What is your favorite movie? My
all-time favorite movies are:Jurassic
Park, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights,
Gremlins, and Titanic. I definitely have a broad range of tastes!
8.
What do you hope to say to people with
your writing? What an excellent question! Since I write a variety of genres for
different age groups, I have several motives for writing. With The Horror Diaries (my scary stories for
kids series), I want to promote imagination and exploration of the world around
us, whether it be in your own backyard/neighborhood or even a different
country. It’s about the love of adventure and excitement. For my teen readers,
with such books as Vocations and the Syren Signature Series, I strive to be
insightful about the human condition. It’s about discovering who you are and
what you want to be in that moment. I always encourage originality and
compassion. Finally, with my adult books, such as What Legends Are Made Of and Whispers
In The Shadows, I want to express how important it is to keep dreaming and
reaching for the stars. It’s about really engaging in life and never settling.
Overall, if I had to choose just one message toshare with my readers, it would
be summed up nicely in this little quote, “Never cease to amaze”.
9.
Is there another hobby you have that
you would like to share? I love animals and nature, and I have been known to
train chipmunks to do cute tricks!
10.
What do you dislike the most about the
publishing world? For the majority of writers, the financial compensation is lacking,
especially considering the amount of time and effort put into this particular
field.Screenwriters are definitely compensated more fairly for their work,
although breaking into that field is also extremely difficult. The upside is
that the emotional rewards of being a writer are extremely high. To a writer,
it’s such an accomplishment to have your book published or your film produced. No
one can ever take that pride away from you.
11.
Where do you see yourself in five
years? I would love to be a full-time screenwriter who writes books in her
spare time. I’m currently working with a production company on a supernatural
TV show for kids, and I’m praying that we get the funding. Although I love
writing short films and features, I believe my true talent lies in teleplays. I
love the character development and several plot lines which the TV format
requires.
